New System to Boost Blood Safety, Transparency, and Access Across Lagos

In a major leap for healthcare innovation, the Lagos State Government has launched the HaemoCentral Blood Inventory Management System (BIMS) and the revamped Lagos State Blood Transfusion Committee (LSBTC) website to enhance transparency, safety, and access in blood donation and transfusion services.

Unveiled on Tuesday, the dual innovations are part of the state’s THEMES Plus Agenda and Lagos State Development Plan 2052, aimed at transforming healthcare delivery through digitisation.

Game-Changer for Blood Services

Dr. Kemi Ogunyemi, Special Adviser to the Governor on Health, described HaemoCentral as a “long overdue” innovation.

“People often fear transfusion due to perceived risks, but with HaemoCentral, we are building trust and saving lives,” she said.

She shared that past gaps in transfusion protocols had cost lives, and this platform is designed to ensure safety and transparency at every stage.

What HaemoCentral Offers:

  • Digital donor registration
  • Barcoded blood labeling for traceability
  • Real-time inventory updates
  • Integration with Lagos Smart Health Information Platform (SHIP)
  • Appointment scheduling for donors
  • Rigorous data protection compliance (in line with Nigeria’s data privacy laws)

Efficiency, Safety, and Civic Responsibility

Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Health, Dr. Olusegun Ogboye, praised the system as a legacy innovation:

“This isn’t just about technology; it’s about creating a culture of accountability and precision in healthcare.”

Dr. Bodunrin Osikomaiya, Executive Secretary of the Lagos State Blood Transfusion Committee, said:

“This system closes the gaps that have cost lives in the past. Every drop of blood will now be accounted for.”

New LSBTC Website and Public Engagement

Alongside HaemoCentral, the official LSBTC website was unveiled to serve as:

  • A donor education hub
  • A platform for public engagement
  • A tool to foster collaboration with healthcare providers and NGOs

Mr. Olapegba, MD of Digital Health Platforms, highlighted the cybersecurity and global compliance standards embedded in the platform, calling it “a cornerstone in the SHIP digital health ecosystem.”
