Former French international William Gallas has issued a sobering warning to football legend Cristiano Ronaldo, urging him to manage his expectations regarding his hopes of winning the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Ronaldo, 40, recently expressed his strong desire to compete at the next World Cup, even revealing that he declined the opportunity to play in the ongoing FIFA Club World Cup with Al-Nassr in order to focus on recovery and preparation. He has since signed a new two-year contract with Al-Nassr, with the 2026 tournament in the United States, Canada, and Mexico firmly in his sights.
Despite his age, Ronaldo remains a key figure for Portugal, having led the national team to a UEFA Nations League title in the 2024–25 season, scoring eight goals and providing one assist in nine games.
However, Gallas believes the five-time Ballon d’Or winner may be setting himself up for disappointment.
“Cristiano Ronaldo will be at the World Cup next summer, and either way, it’ll be emotional,” Gallas told Prime Casino via Goal. “He may not be able to start games anymore, but he can still come off the bench.”
“Portugal look strong – but it’ll be incredibly hard for Ronaldo to fulfil his dream. It will probably end in tears.”
Gallas’ comments echo a growing sentiment that while Ronaldo remains a physical marvel and a proven leader, the challenges of competing at the highest level at age 41 may prove overwhelming—especially given the rise of younger talent within the Portuguese squad.
As the build-up to the 2026 World Cup begins, all eyes will be on how Ronaldo manages his fitness, form, and role within a rapidly evolving team.
