President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved a scholarship programme for students from the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS) to pursue higher education in Nigerian universities, beginning with the next academic session.
The announcement was made during a joint press conference held in Gros Islet, Saint Lucia, alongside Prime Minister Philip J. Pierre. President Tinubu explained that the initiative would be executed through a joint committee comprising representatives from Nigeria and OECS member nations.
“The Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States is very close to us in Africa. We are moving forward to facilitate business and education opportunities, capacity building, and explore other areas such as agriculture and food security. We won’t drop the ball,” Tinubu affirmed.
The scholarship programme is part of a broader effort to strengthen ties between Nigeria and the Caribbean region through enhanced cooperation in education, trade, and development.
President Tinubu also disclosed that talks are ongoing to grant visa waivers to holders of diplomatic and official passports from OECS countries, aimed at easing travel and bolstering bilateral relations.
In response, Prime Minister Pierre praised the initiative, calling it “a timely and practical expression of solidarity.” He noted that discussions with President Tinubu also touched on visa facilitation, air connectivity, and tourism development.
“We expect students to begin their studies in Nigeria in the next academic year. A joint committee has been formed to address education, trade, and travel issues, with a strong emphasis on people-to-people exchange,” Prime Minister Pierre stated.
Earlier, President Tinubu addressed a joint sitting of the Saint Lucian Parliament, where he outlined his vision for a revitalised Africa-Caribbean partnership focused on shared values, mutual growth, and long-term collaboration.
This development is part of Nigeria’s broader diplomatic strategy to deepen ties with Caribbean nations and enhance South-South cooperation.
