A Vaccine used to illustrate the story
Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, has announced a $3 million investment over the next two years to strengthen routine immunisation and primary health care in Kaduna State, aiming to accelerate progress towards universal vaccine coverage.
Jessica Crawford, Gavi’s Senior Country Manager for Nigeria, made the announcement during a high-level field mission to the state that featured meetings with top officials, health facility visits, and strategy sessions with partners.
She commended Kaduna’s strong leadership and results in immunisation, noting that the funding would help extend vaccine access to hard-to-reach areas and ensure equity in coverage.
“This funding, drawn from Gavi’s latest Health System Strengthening grant, will be implemented with the Kaduna State government, the National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA), and other partners,” Ms Crawford said. “It will target critical priorities such as improving vaccine delivery, addressing inequities, and reducing the number of zero-dose children.”
Over the past seven years, Gavi has supported Kaduna through cold chain equipment provision, outbreak response, vaccine procurement, and workforce support.
Hassan Ousmane, NPHCDA’s Head of Routine Immunisation, highlighted the federal government’s central role in procuring vaccines for all Nigerian states, while Gavi and other partners provide complementary funding, equipment, and support.
He noted that Gavi’s national pledge stands at $13 million over three years, with states providing counterpart contributions.
