11 Hours of Questioning: EFCC Releases Activists Randy Peter and Mama Pee After Abuja Interrogation

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has released prominent civic activists Randy Peter and Precious Oruche (popularly known online as Mama Pee) after subjecting them to an intensive, 11-hour interrogation session at the commission’s headquarters in Abuja.

The duo, who are widely recognized for their vocal socio-political commentary on Nigerian social media, finally walked out of the anti-graft agency’s premises shortly after midnight on Wednesday, July 15, 2026.

However, their legal interactions with the commission are far from over, as both activists have been ordered to report back to the EFCC office today, Thursday, July 16, 2026, to face further questioning.

According to fellow activist and close colleague Justice Cracks, who personally accompanied the duo to the EFCC headquarters, the experience was a grueling test of patience.

Detailing the timeline of events on X (formerly Twitter), Justice Cracks revealed that they arrived at the anti-graft agency’s office in the early afternoon on Wednesday.

As the hours dragged on without any sign of the activists leaving the building, concern began to ripple across Nigerian digital spaces. Justice Cracks, waiting outside in the car park, even shared a video update from his vehicle to assure concerned followers that he was keeping vigil.

The long-awaited release finally came at approximately 12:00 a.m. (Midnight), ending an exhausting 11-hour wait. “For now, everything is fine,” Cracks added, while confirming they were instructed to return the next morning.

Social Media Sounds the Alarm Over “Secret Arrest” Rumors

Before their midnight release was made public, panic had already spread across Nigerian social media networks.

The alarm was first raised by Esther Umoh, a well-known political photographer who shot to national prominence during Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi’s 2023 campaign. Taking to her X account, Umoh warned that the activists were being held indefinitely despite willingly complying with the law.

“As respectful citizens, they honored the invitation today. But as I type this, they are yet to be released,” Umoh wrote, sparking widespread speculation that the invitation had transitioned into a formal state arrest. The announcement immediately triggered highly charged debates regarding freedom of speech and the perceived targeting of dissenting voices in Abuja.
