Four members of the Rivers State House of Assembly who had earlier stepped back from the impeachment process against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy have changed their minds and declared support for the impeachment again.
The lawmakers — Sylvanus Nwankwo (Minority Leader), Peter Abbey (Degema), Barile Nwakoh (Khana I), and Emilia Amadi (Obio/Akpor II) — announced their reversal on Friday at a live press briefing held outside the Rivers State House of Assembly complex in Port Harcourt.
Earlier this week, the group had called for a peaceful, political solution to the ongoing crisis between the Assembly and Fubara. They appealed to their colleagues to pause the impeachment process and seek dialogue. But on Friday, the lawmakers said the governor and his deputy had failed to engage in meaningful discussion and instead appeared to respond with media attacks rather than negotiations.
For that reason, the lawmakers said they now support allowing the impeachment proceedings to continue. They argued that efforts to find a political compromise were ignored, leaving no choice but to proceed with the constitutional process.
The impeachment move, led by Speaker Martin Amaewhule, was launched last week amid allegations against Governor Fubara and Deputy Governor Ngozi Odu for gross misconduct. These include claims that the governor spent public funds without the approval of the Assembly and demolished the Assembly complex.
Earlier this week, the four lawmakers had withdrawn from the impeachment push and urged their colleagues to seek peace. Their reversal now appears to have given the impeachment effort fresh momentum within the Assembly, which has insisted that it will proceed with the process as required by the Constitution.
