APC Says Wike Has Constitutional Right to Support Any Candidate After FCT Area Council Elections

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has publicly backed Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, saying he can lawfully support any candidate he chooses in elections — even if they belong to a different party.

APC’s National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka, made this clear in an interview on Channels Television’s Morning Brief on Monday. His comments come after controversy over Wike’s active support for APC candidates in the February 21 FCT Area Council elections, where the ruling party won five out of six chairmanship seats.

Morka said:

“If Nyesom Wike wants to go on campaigning for any candidate in any party whatsoever, he has the inherent liberty to do so.”
“Wike is a citizen of the Federal Republic of Nigeria who also has freedom guaranteed by the constitution. He has the right to support any candidate he wants.”

The APC’s defence of Wike is rooted in the 1999 Constitution, which guarantees freedom of expression and association. Morka stressed that supporting a candidate is a personal choice and not necessarily part of a broader party strategy.

Two Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chairmanship aspirants — Julius Adamu (Bwari) and Zadna Dantani (Abuja Municipal Area Council) — withdrew from their races and publicly backed APC candidates after interventions reportedly linked to Wike. The PDP National Working Committee criticised these moves as “shameful” and “anti-democratic,” claiming they happened without proper party consent and created a “forced consensus.”

Wike’s open support for APC candidates has triggered debate in Nigeria’s political space about party loyalty, cross-carpeting, and the boundaries of political engagement in a multi-party democracy.

President Bola Tinubu also praised Wike’s role in the FCT election victories and in recent by-elections in Rivers State, showing firm backing from the ruling party’s top leadership.
