Adamawa Governor Fintiri Officially Defects to APC in Major Political Shift

Adamawa State Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri has formally left the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and joined the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in a development that is set to reshape politics in the state and nationally.

Fintiri made the announcement on Friday during a statewide broadcast, saying his decision reflects what he believes is in the best interest of the people and development of Adamawa State.

A Move With Broad Political Support

Governor Fintiri stated that he was not alone in the decision — his entire cabinet, key PDP officials, and many supporters moved with him into the APC. He explained that the strategic shift came after wide consultations and careful consideration of how to accelerate development, align with the federal government, and bring more benefits to the people of Adamawa.

In his address, he said the move was driven by a desire to bring greater opportunities, collaboration, and resources to the state, particularly through stronger ties with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s government.

Strengthening APC’s Hold

Fintiri’s defection is a significant political development. According to reports, it boosts the APC’s control over Nigerian states, further reducing the presence of the PDP at the state governor level. With his move, the APC is now said to control 30 out of 36 states.

Before the governor’s announcement, there were signs of a political shift in Adamawa. Just days earlier, 15 lawmakers from the Adamawa State House of Assembly — including Speaker Bathiya Wesley and the Deputy Speaker — resigned from the PDP, citing internal crises within the party, and signalled their plan to join the APC.

What Fintiri Told Citizens

In his message to residents, Fintiri emphasised that aligning with the APC was not about personal ambition but about advancing the state’s development goals. He encouraged supporters to register massively with the APC and work toward a shared vision of progress and stability.

“This decision is in the overall developmental interest of our dear state and its citizens,” he stated, noting that closer partnership with the federal government would improve access to resources and infrastructure investments.

Political analysts have seen Fintiri’s defection as part of a broader realignment ahead of the 2027 general elections, where major parties are positioning themselves for dominance. The governor’s move underscores the APC’s growing influence and the challenges facing the PDP in retaining key political figures.

For Adamawa, the realignment could translate into stronger federal ties and more development projects, though critics may argue it weakens opposition voices in the state. Supporters, however, believe it will accelerate growth, stability, and improved governance.

As the political landscape continues to evolve, many eyes are now on how this decision will influence local and national politics in the months ahead.
