NUC Grants Accreditation for New Courses at UNILORIN and LASUSTECH

Abuja, Nigeria – May 14, 2025 — The National Universities Commission (NUC) has approved a series of new academic programmes at the University of Ilorin (UNILORIN) and Lagos State University of Science and Technology (LASUSTECH), solidifying both institutions’ commitment to academic excellence and program expansion.

According to separate statements from both universities, UNILORIN received full accreditation for 36 out of the 37 programmes it presented during the October/November 2024 accreditation exercise, while LASUSTECH secured full accreditation for 22 out of 25 of its assessed academic programmes.


UNILORIN Achieves 100% Accreditation Outcome

A statement signed by *UNILORIN’s Director of Corporate Affairs, Mr. Kunle Akogun, confirmed that the NUC granted full accreditation to the university’s submitted programmes, with only one — Hausa — receiving interim accreditation. The accreditation approval was communicated via a letter dated April 30, 2025, signed by **Engr. Abraham Chundusu, Acting Director of Accreditation on behalf of the NUC Executive Secretary, *Prof. Abdullahi Ribadu.

Highlights of the accreditation include:

  • Faculty of Education: All 17 programmes fully accredited.
  • Faculty of Basic Medical Sciences: Anatomy secured full accreditation.
  • Faculty of Communication and Information Sciences: Computer Science approved.
  • Engineering and Technology: Chemical and Mechanical Engineering granted full status.
  • Faculty of Arts: Igbo received full accreditation, while Hausa was given interim status.

Vice Chancellor Prof. Wahab Egbewole (SAN) described the development as a testament to the university’s continuous investment in both human and infrastructural resources.


LASUSTECH Marks Accreditation Milestone Post-Transition

In a parallel announcement, *LASUSTECH—which transitioned from Lagos State Polytechnic to a full-fledged university in February 2022—announced that *88% of its programmes received full accreditation, with only three receiving interim status.

According to a statement by the university’s spokesperson Mr. Lanre Kuye, the courses that earned full accreditation include:

  • Faculty of Administration: All six programmes, including Accounting, Marketing, and Business Administration, scored between 86.9% and 95.6%.
  • Faculty of Agriculture: Animal Science, Crop Science, and Agricultural Extension secured full approval. However, Agricultural Economics and Farm Management received interim status due to staffing challenges.
  • Faculty of Science: Physics with Electronics, Mathematics, Microbiology, and Statistics scored above 90%, with Physics and Mathematics achieving 96.6%. Chemistry and Industrial Chemistry received interim approval.

Notable performances were also recorded in *Communication, Media Studies, and Industrial Design, with Mass Communication scoring 92.7% and Industrial Design 95.6%. The *Economics programme led overall with a 97.4% score.

“All accredited programmes are newly matured and mark LASUSTECH’s successful transition to a degree-awarding institution under the NUC’s academic framework,” Kuye added. The accreditation is valid through 2029, affirming the university’s compliance with national academic standards.


These approvals are seen as a significant step forward for both institutions, further enhancing their capacity to provide quality education aligned with national development goals and global academic standards.
