A heartwarming sign-out celebration at the Federal Polytechnic, Nekede, Imo State, has captured the hearts of thousands across social media.
Chinyere, the proud mother of a final-year student, Promise Okoro, has revealed the emotional reason behind gifting her son a live goat to celebrate his academic completion.
The gesture, which was captured in a viral video, showed crowds of cheering students surrounding the pair as Chinyere handed over the goat and embraced her son tightly.
“No Money for a Jeep” — A Reward for Keeping Promises
Speaking in an interview with BBC News Pidgin, Chinyere explained that the unique gift was her way of rewarding Promise for keeping his word, obeying her instructions, remaining respectful, and staying entirely away from cultism throughout his years on campus.
She shared that before he left for school, she vowed to give him a special surprise if he completed his studies without disappointing the family.
“I don’t have money for a 4matic jeep, and I love that guy, my son. I said, let me buy this goat as a gift.
“When he was going to school, I told him not to affiliate himself with cultism and to make me proud by not dropping out. I told him that if he made me proud, I was going to surprise him. He didn’t disappoint me.” — Chinyere, Mother
Chinyere revealed that she purchased the goat for ₦120,000, adding that even if it had cost ₦200,000, she would have done everything possible to fulfill her promise. She expressed immense joy at the loud cheers from students as she walked across campus with the animal.

Recalling the unexpected moment, Promise admitted he was completely unaware of his mother’s plans. He initially mistook the loud student commotion for a campus proposal when he heard crowd members shouting “say yes” in the distance.
“It was one of my coursemates that called me because I thought it was an engagement serenade because people in the vicinity were screaming, ‘say yes.’
“So I was surprised for her to even call me to come and see my mum because she brought a goat. I came, happy and deeply emotional. I wasn’t ashamed. I was extremely happy. I am not even ashamed in school; why then would I be ashamed of my mum or her action?” — Promise Okoro, Graduate
