Kiddwaya Faces Backlash Over Public Fundraising Appeal for Benue Massacre Victims

Reality TV star and billionaire heir Terseer Waya, popularly known as Kiddwaya, has come under intense criticism after launching a public fundraising campaign to support victims of the recent massacre in Benue State.

On Wednesday, Kiddwaya announced a donation drive through his non-governmental organization, the Kiddwaya Foundation, urging Nigerians to contribute between ₦500 and ₦500,000 to aid those affected by the tragic attack. “At the Kiddwaya Foundation, we’re mobilizing resources to provide food, shelter, and essential support to those affected. But we can’t do it alone; we need your help,” he wrote in an appeal posted on X (formerly Twitter).

However, his call for donations was met with widespread backlash, as many Nigerians questioned the sincerity of his appeal in light of his frequently showcased lavish lifestyle. Social media users were quick to point out the irony of a billionaire’s son, known for flaunting wealth online, asking the public—many of whom are struggling financially—to donate for humanitarian relief.

Following the criticism, Kiddwaya deleted the viral post from his page.

The appeal was launched in response to the gruesome killings in Yelewata community, Benue State, where over 200 people reportedly lost their lives in a brutal attack allegedly carried out by Fulani herdsmen over the weekend.

Public reactions on social media were scathing:

  • @_itsoyin commented: “Kiddwaya trying to scam Nigerians is what I never expected to see. Nigerians are going through it.”
  • @ArakunrinSugar sarcastically remarked: “A man with enough cash to light cigars with hundred-dollar bills has suddenly discovered the power of community fundraising. How noble.”
  • @Ndubuisi_23 wrote: “When it’s time to show wealth and flamboyant living, Kiddwaya is at the forefront. But when it’s time to help the people of Benue, he asks the public to contribute.”
  • @AndyjnrUmaru added: “Kiddwaya, billionaire pikin, dey ask for general donation for Benue, with all the lavish lifestyle. E still get plenty things wey we never understand. One day, truth go commot.”

As debates continue online, many Nigerians are calling on public figures to lead by example—especially when they possess the means to make a tangible impact without relying solely on public donations.
