ABUJA, Nigeria – The Nigeria Police Force has responded to the circulation of a disturbing viral video showing a schoolgirl smoking cannabis, clarifying that the video did not originate from Nigeria, contrary to social media speculations.

The video, which sparked widespread outrage online earlier this week, appeared to show a young girl in school uniform confidently inhaling smoke in the presence of others, leading to public calls for immediate disciplinary and legal action.

In a statement issued on Thursday, the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, confirmed that investigations revealed the video was neither recent nor recorded within the country.

“We have thoroughly reviewed the footage and liaised with our counterparts abroad. Our findings confirm that the video did not originate from Nigeria,” the police spokesperson said.

He further appealed to the public to refrain from spreading unverified information that could cause panic or damage reputations.

Misinformation and the Danger of Viral Content

ACP Adejobi emphasized the growing issue of misinformation, especially as videos taken out of context continue to circulate without fact-checking.

“We are urging bloggers and content creators to verify the authenticity of any material they share, particularly those that involve minors or potentially criminal activity,” he said.

The police also warned that sharing such sensitive content involving minors without proper verification could violate child protection and cyber laws.

Public Reaction To The Schoolgirl Smoking Cannabis

The video initially trended under hashtags such as #SchoolgirlSmoking and #DisciplineOurYouth, prompting debates around parental care, peer pressure, and substance abuse among Nigerian students.

However, the revelation that the video was not from Nigeria has shifted public discussion toward media ethics and responsible content sharing.

Police Commitment to Youth Protection

While the video has been dismissed as foreign, the police assured Nigerians that it remains committed to protecting students from exposure to drugs and other forms of moral decay.

“We will continue to work with schools, parents, and the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) to educate and protect our children,” the statement added.
