The Nigerian media industry is in mourning following the tragic death of Somtochukwu Christelle Maduagwu, a news anchor, reporter, and producer with ARISE News Channel.
The 29-year-old broadcaster, popularly known as Sommie, was killed in the early hours of Monday, September 29, 2025, during a violent armed robbery attack at her residence in the Katampe area of Abuja.
In an official statement released on its X (formerly Twitter) handle, ARISE News expressed deep sorrow over the loss of their colleague.
“It is with heavy hearts that the management and staff of ARISE News Channel announce the passing of our beloved colleague, News Anchor, Reporter, and Producer, Somtochukwu Christelle Maduagwu. Sommie tragically passed away in the early hours of Monday, September 29, 2025, following an armed robbery incident in her residence in Katampe, Abuja, that is being investigated by the Nigeria Police,” the statement read.
The broadcaster described Maduagwu as a vibrant voice who engaged and connected with viewers, a professional lawyer, and a cherished colleague who made a lasting impact within and beyond the newsroom.
Following the announcement, condolences and tributes have flooded social media and the press from colleagues, civil society, the legal community, and viewers who admired her work.
Many mourners have demanded justice and called for a swift investigation into the armed robbery that claimed her life.
ARISE News emphasised the urgent need for accountability and justice:
“We remain in shock and call for a speedy investigation, apprehension, and prosecution of the culprits.”
The channel also extended its condolences to Maduagwu’s family, friends, and loved ones, noting that although her voice is now silent, her spirit, passion, and legacy will endure.
Sommie had quickly risen to prominence as a trusted face on Nigerian television. Beyond journalism, she was also a lawyer, remembered for her professionalism, brilliance, and supportive nature.
