“Atiku Demands Annulment While Wike Reasserts Control”: A Power Play in Rivers LG Elections

Atiku Abubakar condemns Rivers LG poll as a travesty, demands annulment.

On August 30, 2025, the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) released election results: the All Progressives Congress (APC) clinched 20 out of 23 local government areas (LGAs), leaving the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) with just three.

Ironically, many of the LGA winners—across both parties—are perceived as loyal allies of FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, signalling his enduring influence over Rivers State politics.

Atiku’s Outcry: Declaring the Poll a “Travesty”

Former Vice President and PDP stalwart Atiku Abubakar was quick to condemn the poll. On X, he labelled it “an awful absurdity and a travesty to the very notion of elective democracy,” calling for its annulment and urging opposition parties to reject the results outright.

Atiku also called on Nigerians and the international community to scrutinize what he described as a dangerous turn for democracy and a brazen political power play.

Wike vs. Fubara

This election also casts fresh light on the longstanding feud between Wike and his successor, Governor Siminalayi Fubara. Their rivalry over state control intensified following attempts to shift legislative leadership in 2024—escalating into violence, factionalism in the state assembly, impeachment attempts, and ultimately, the bombing of the House complex.

In March 2025, President Tinubu declared a state of emergency in Rivers State, suspending Governor Fubara, his deputy, and the state assembly, and installing Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas (retd.) as sole administrator. Ibas promptly replaced Fubara appointees with Wike loyalists, effectively tilting power back toward Wike.
