Inter Miami captain Lionel Messi has responded to his team’s 4-0 defeat to Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) in the Round of 16 of the Club World Cup.
Despite Messi’s presence on the pitch, Inter Miami were unable to match the firepower of his former club. PSG cruised to victory with a brace from João Neves, an own goal from Tomas Avilés, and a strike by Achraf Hakimi. With the win, the French side advance to the quarter-finals where they will face Bayern Munich.
Following the match, Messi took to Instagram to reflect on the loss and encourage his team to look ahead.
“Today the Club World Cup ends for us with defeat against the Champions League winners, where there are players I appreciate and that gave me joy to see them again,” Messi wrote.
“We leave with pride to have achieved our goal of reaching the top 16 of the tournament. Now to focus on the MLS and all that is coming.”
Messi, who joined Inter Miami in 2023 after two seasons with PSG, was warmly reunited with several of his former teammates during the match.
