“We Will Nigeria Basketball” – D’Tigress Eye Quarterfinal Awakening Against Cameroon
As the 2025 FIBA Women’s Afrobasket enters the quarterfinal stage, defending champions D’Tigress of Nigeria are set to face hosts Cameroon in a high-stakes encounter tonight, with players admitting they’ve yet to reach their best form.
After battling to a hard-fought 60–55 win over Mozambique in their final group game, veteran point guard Ezinne Kalu called for renewed focus and intensity.
“We haven’t been playing Nigeria basketball,” Kalu said frankly. “We’ve made mistakes in the first two games, but that’s not going to deter us. We will go in and do what we do best.”
She emphasized the team’s commitment to tactical improvements ahead of the Cameroon clash.
“We’ll watch film, practice more, and fix our mistakes. The quarterfinal is going to be one possession at a time.”
Power forward Nicole Enabosi, a key figure in Nigeria’s physical game, acknowledged Mozambique’s strong performance and stressed the importance of maintaining composure.
“It was a tough win. Respect to all the teams here, but we’re here to play and win for Nigeria,” she said.
Enabosi echoed Kalu’s confidence that the team can shift into higher gear as the knockout phase begins.
D’Tigress are chasing history. Unbeaten in 26 straight Afrobasket games since 2015, the team is on course for a record fifth consecutive title, a feat never achieved in the competition’s history.
Though they finished the group stage unbeaten, victories over Rwanda and Mozambique revealed vulnerabilities not often seen in past tournaments. The team will need to rediscover its dominant rhythm to advance further.
The quarterfinal match is scheduled for 9:00 PM WAT tonight, July 31, at the Palais des Sports de Treichville, Abidjan.
