Governor Francis Nwifuru of Ebonyi State
The Ebonyi State Government has demolished an ongoing plaza construction project in the Azuebonyi axis of Ebonyi Local Government Area and sealed a popular nightclub in Abakaliki, citing violations of planning laws and environmental regulations.
The operation, carried out on Monday by the Ministry of Capital Territory, was personally led by the Commissioner, Sunday Inyima.
According to Mr Inyima, the building project was situated on land reserved for the construction of a dual carriage Sub Trans-Saharan Highway. He explained that the structure fell within the 45 to 50-meter road setback limit.
“There was no approved building plan by the ministry when the development was still at the foundation level,” the commissioner said. “We issued a stop-work order, a revocation order, and even confiscated some of their items. Despite this, the developers continued with the project.”
He warned that the government would not allow unauthorized structures to obstruct urban planning and development, adding that the enforcement should serve as a deterrent to other developers.
The ministry also sealed Casablanca Lounge over persistent noise pollution, despite repeated warnings.
Mr Inyima said the noise from the facility constituted a nuisance, particularly at night, and management ignored multiple invitations to resolve the issue.
The commissioner emphasized that Governor Francis Nwifuru’s administration is committed to strict enforcement of the state’s master plan.
“We are not in a Banana Republic. This state is governed by the rule of law, and people must comply with regulations,” he said.
