The Federal Government of Nigeria has launched the distribution of maternal and neonatal health (MNH) commodities worth N2.9 billion, a nationwide initiative aimed at reducing maternal and child mortality.
The programme, flagged off in Abuja on Monday, is spearheaded by the National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA).
Speaking at the ceremony, Muyi Aina, Executive Director of NPHCDA, said the intervention is designed to provide high-impact solutions across primary healthcare (PHC) facilities in selected states, particularly those with the highest maternal mortality burden.
He noted that the initiative aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, focusing on safeguarding the lives of women and children.
“This initiative targets preventable deaths and seeks to bridge critical healthcare gaps. States are encouraged to sustain and expand the programme within their operational frameworks,” Mr Aina said.
The distribution will initially cover 80 Local Government Areas (LGAs) with high maternal health risks, and all commodities will be free of charge to women and children.
The intervention also includes:
Dr Dayo Adeyanju, National Coordinator of the Maternal and Newborn Mortality Reduction Innovation and Initiatives (MAMII), said the campaign underscores the need for collaboration among national, state, and local health authorities, with support from development partners.
“Too many women die needlessly from preventable causes. Even one avoidable death is too many,” he said.
Representatives of WHO, UNICEF, UNFPA, and the Gates Foundation also pledged continued support, commending the government’s efforts to improve maternal health.
Items being distributed include:
The government said the initiative marks a renewed commitment to drastically cutting maternal and neonatal mortality across Nigeria.
