Guinness World Records (GWR) has officially confirmed Nigerian celebrity chef Hilda Baci’s successful attempt at cooking the largest serving of Nigerian-style jollof rice, cementing her place in culinary history.
GWR announced on Monday that Hilda, in collaboration with Gino Nigeria, achieved an astonishing 8,780 kg (19,356 lb 9 oz) serving of jollof rice during a nine-hour cooking session at Eko Hotels and Suites, Victoria Island, Lagos.
The record-breaking feat took nine months of planning and two months of pot fabrication to execute. According to GWR, thousands of people attended the event, which featured live performances and entertainment.
The Guinness World Records statement detailed the massive quantities of ingredients used, which included:
It took 1,200 kg of gas to create more than 16,600 plates of jollof rice. GWR noted that strict rules prohibited food waste, and every plate had to be carefully measured and documented before being served to the crowd.
“It took nine hours of fire, passion and teamwork,” Hilda said, as thousands of hungry supporters cheered her on.
Hilda Baci is no stranger to Guinness World Records. In June 2023, she was recognised as the record holder for the longest individual cooking marathon, surpassing the previous 87-hour record with more than 100 hours of cooking. However, her reign was later overtaken by Irish chef Alan Fisher, who cooked for 119 hours and 57 minutes.
Despite the setback, Hilda’s latest feat underscores her determination to break boundaries and promote Nigerian cuisine on the global stage.
