Sporting CP striker Viktor Gyökeres has reportedly agreed to forgo €2 million from his salary to secure a transfer to Premier League side Arsenal.
The Swedish forward, one of the most in-demand players of the 2025 summer transfer window, has already reached an agreement on personal terms with the North London club and is expected to complete the move in the coming days.
Gyökeres has made no secret of his desire to leave the Portuguese top flight for a bigger challenge in European football. Several top clubs were in the race to sign him, but Arsenal have emerged as the winners—partly thanks to the player’s commitment to joining the club at all costs.
According to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, quoting Portuguese outlet Record, Gyökeres agreed to take a financial hit, sacrificing €2 million from his potential earnings to help facilitate negotiations between Arsenal and Sporting.
“Sporting insist on a higher fee compared to Arsenal’s proposal… and Gyökeres tries his best, also giving up money to make it happen,” Romano reported.
Negotiations between both clubs are still ongoing, particularly over the structure and value of the transfer fee. The deal’s breakthrough came after Gyökeres reportedly threatened to go on strike if Sporting continued to block the move.
The 26-year-old’s determination to join Arsenal and play at a higher competitive level has impressed fans, with many praising his willingness to make financial sacrifices for the sake of his career.
