{"id":287,"date":"2025-04-25T08:32:04","date_gmt":"2025-04-25T08:32:04","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/46.137.26.149\/?p=287"},"modified":"2025-04-25T08:32:06","modified_gmt":"2025-04-25T08:32:06","slug":"new-academic-programmes-for-nigerian-universities","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sparkmedia.africa\/?p=287","title":{"rendered":"NUC to Introduce 12 New Programmes to Nigerian University Curriculum"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><em>Abuja, Nigeria<\/em> \u2013 The <em>National Universities Commission (NUC)<\/em> has announced plans to integrate <em>12 new academic programmes<\/em> into the Nigerian university curriculum, as part of its broader efforts to align higher education with 21st-century demands and improve graduates&#8217; employability and self-reliance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The new programmes are set to be included in the <em>Core Curriculum and Minimum Academic Standards (CCMAS)<\/em> after undergoing necessary stakeholder validation and expert review.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to Nigerian Tribune, these programmes were either omitted or remained outstanding during the last major curriculum overhaul of the <em>Nigerian University System (NUS)<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><em>List of New Programmes<\/em><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The 12 proposed courses include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Artificial Intelligence<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Classical Christian Education<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Community Health Science<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Cooperative Economics and Management Studies<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Doctor of Medical Laboratory Science<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Geomatics Engineering<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Intelligence and Security Studies<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Parasitology and Entomology<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Sports Management<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Telecommunication Science<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Islamic Economics and Finance<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><em>Responding to Industry Needs and Innovation<\/em><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Professor Abdullahi Yusufu Ribadu<\/em>, Executive Secretary of the NUC, explained that the initiative is a response to growing requests from universities and professional bodies, seeking the development of new, relevant programmes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cWe analysed each submission to assess its viability and market demand. Eventually, we selected 12 academic programmes for inclusion in the CCMAS,\u201d Ribadu said.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>He noted that the commission is empowered to set minimum academic standards and accredit degrees in all Nigerian universities, under <em>Section 10(1)<\/em> of the <em>Education (National Minimum Standards and Establishment of Institutions) Act<\/em>, Cap. E3, Laws of the Federation, 2004.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cAs the global education landscape evolves, our curriculum must evolve too. We need programmes that not only impart knowledge but build critical thinking, innovation, and adaptability,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><em>Panel and Stakeholder Involvement<\/em><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The NUC has constituted expert panels to finalize the content of the new programmes. Each panel includes <em>two NUC representatives<\/em> and subject-matter experts selected from across the country\u2019s six geopolitical zones.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Mal. Abubakar Girei<\/em>, Acting Director of Academic Planning at the NUC, said that assembling such panels is key to enhancing academic quality and ensuring Nigerian students remain globally competitive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cWhile it is practically impossible to gather all professors, we\u2019ve selected resource persons with vast expertise and regional representation,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>The curriculum will be structured with <em>70% developed by NUC<\/em> and the remaining <em>30% left to universities<\/em> to tailor based on local context\u2014consistent with the previous curriculum development model.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><em>Next Steps and Approval<\/em><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The final draft curriculum will undergo another round of review before submission to the <em>NUC management<\/em> and ultimately the <em>Federal Executive Council (FEC)<\/em> for formal approval.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Prof. Ribadu urged the review team to contribute constructively and align their recommendations with <em>national development goals<\/em> and <em>global best practices<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cCritique is welcome\u2014but with the aim of strengthening, not condemning.
