Interim Report Reveals Military Coup Plot Targeting President, VP and Major Government Sites

Nigeria Defence Headquarters briefing on alleged coup plot

An interim report reveals military coup plot against President Bola Tinubu’s government, according to security sources who obtained the document on Tuesday. The report shows that a network of serving military officers — led by an unnamed Army Colonel — planned to overthrow the government and take control of key national sites.

The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) said in October 2025 that 16 officers were arrested for indiscipline and breaches of military rules. At the time, the arrests were publicly described as internal disciplinary matters.

But the new interim investigation report reveals military coup plot went far beyond routine misconduct. Investigators say the Colonel had formed a network of like-minded officers from the Army, Navy and Air Force. They were allegedly assigned to secretly study important locations such as the Presidential Villa, Armed Forces Complex, Niger Barracks in Abuja, and international airports in Abuja and Lagos.

According to the report, the Colonel’s grievances over repeated failures in promotion helped him recruit other officers who were unhappy. The officers were said to be preparing early plans for a coup that was reportedly scheduled for October 25, 2025, and that aimed to remove the President, Vice President Kashim Shettima, senior ministers and service chiefs.

Searches on the Colonel’s vehicle reportedly found charms and anti-government materials, and a raid on his home in Lokogoma, Abuja uncovered sensitive documents. These documents allegedly showed the roles some officers were to play during the operation, including how key government leaders would be handled.

Investigators also say financial inducements of between ₦2 million and ₦5 million were paid to some officers to support logistics and mobilisation. Encrypted messaging apps such as WhatsApp and Zangi were reportedly used to coordinate activities and communication.

One Lieutenant Colonel has reportedly become a key witness, helping investigators map how recruitment, funding and communications worked inside the group. Security sources say the alleged plan was serious and could have had “grave implications for national stability” if uncovered too late.

The Defence Headquarters has confirmed the report has been handed to the proper authority and that indicted officers will face trial before military judicial panels. Investigations are also said to be expanding to track other suspects, including civilians and financiers connected to the alleged plot.
