The Kano State Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs has publicly said the Deputy Governor, Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo, should resign from office after he chose not to join the All Progressives Congress (APC) with Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf.
Commissioner Ibrahim Waiya spoke to journalists in Kano on Thursday, stressing that effective government needs trust and shared political direction between the governor and deputy. He said it may no longer make sense for the deputy governor to take part in important government meetings if he and the governor are in different political parties.
Waiya said, “This is his personal decision, but there is no way someone who is no longer with you should be part of the routine council meeting.” He added that being in government requires loyalty and that a deputy in a different party might not be trusted on sensitive matters.
The commissioner also called resignation the “most honourable option” for Gwarzo under the circumstances. “If I were him, I would humbly resign,” he stated.
Governor Abba Yusuf recently left the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) to join the ruling APC at the federal level. Many lawmakers and political leaders in Kano followed him. But Gwarzo chose to stay aligned with former NNPP leadership instead of defecting.
Waiya said he believes the governor’s move to the APC will help Kano attract more development projects and federal support, and that unity in the executive branch of government is important.
The pressure on the deputy governor comes as political realignments continue in Kano State ahead of future elections.
