Lagos Government Warns Residents After Diesel Tanker Overturns at Tincan–Liverpool Bridge

The Lagos State Government has issued a stern warning to residents after a diesel tanker overturned and spilled fuel at the Tincan–Liverpool Bridge area in Apapa, Lagos, prompting dangerous behaviour from some members of the public.

The incident occurred on Monday morning when a fully loaded diesel tanker toppled on the busy Liverpool Bridge, inward Mile 2, spilling its contents across the road and disrupting traffic along the important transport corridor.

In an urgent situation report, the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) said the tanker was leaking fuel and confirmed that emergency responders had been deployed to the scene to manage the spill and reduce risks.

LASEMA cautioned the public against approaching the accident site or gathering spilled fuel. “Members of the public are urged to exercise EXTREME CAUTION to avoid any secondary incident from scooping product or lighting any flame near the area,” the agency warned, highlighting the high risk of fire and explosion in such situations.

Footage shared on social media showed some residents and passersby collecting diesel from the overturned tanker with containers despite the danger posed by the highly flammable liquid. Authorities have emphasised that this behaviour can trigger serious accidents, including fire outbreaks and loss of lives.

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) confirmed the tanker was fully loaded with diesel and that the spill had spread across the bridge due to damage to the tank. LASTMA said security agencies had been alerted and traffic diverted to minimise risks to commuters.

In a separate statement, LASTMA reported that emergency responders including the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, the Nigeria Police Force, and other safety personnel were at the scene to contain the spill and avert potential fire hazards. Traffic was redirected to the other side of the bridge to ensure safety and keep vehicles moving.

Officials urged motorists to follow the directions of traffic managers on the ground and avoid the affected axis until the situation is fully under control.
