Nigerian rapper and singer, Ilerioluwa Aloba, popularly known as Mohbad & Son
Two months after the coroner’s inquest into the death of Nigerian singer Ilerioluwa “Mohbad” Aloba, which recommended the prosecution of auxiliary nurse Feyisayo Ogedengbe, fresh legal drama has emerged—this time over the paternity of Mohbad’s son, Liam.
Since Mohbad’s death on 12 September 2023, his family has remained embroiled in controversies ranging from the autopsy report to property disputes. However, the question of Liam’s paternity has been the most persistent and contentious.
Mohbad’s father, Mr. Joseph Aloba, has repeatedly demanded that his late son’s widow, Wunmi, submit Liam for a DNA test. He alleged that Mohbad himself expressed doubts about Liam’s paternity before his passing.
On Tuesday, the Magistrate’s Court in Ikorodu, Lagos State, presided over by Magistrate Adefisoye Sonuga, ordered that DNA tests be conducted on Liam to resolve the dispute once and for all.
The order followed an application filed by Mr. Aloba under the Family Court of Lagos State (Civil Procedure) Rules 2012 and the Magistrate Courts (Civil Procedure) Rules 2009.
In his application, Mr. Aloba asked the court to allow tissue, hair, or other samples to be extracted from Mohbad’s remains at the Military Hospital, Yaba, for analysis. He requested that the DNA test be performed in an accredited medical facility within Lagos, another location in Nigeria, or even abroad—at his own expense.
Ruling on the matter, Magistrate Sonuga directed that two DNA tests be conducted: one in an accredited hospital in Nigeria and another in an accredited medical facility abroad. The court also ordered that either Mr. Aloba, Wunmi, or their representatives must be present during the collection of Liam’s samples.
The matter was subsequently adjourned until 11 November.
At Tuesday’s hearing, Mr. Aloba was represented by Augustine Adegbemi of the law firm Wahab Shittu & Co., while Kabir Akingbolu appeared on behalf of Wunmi.
The case underscores the deepening rift between Mohbad’s family and his widow. Despite public appeals for peace, Mr. Aloba has insisted that the DNA test is essential for clarity, citing issues of child maintenance, inheritance, and family honor.
Earlier reports noted that Mr. Aloba had vowed to pursue legal action against Wunmi regardless of the DNA outcome, accusing her of exposing Liam—then only five months old—to inappropriate environments. However, he has since clarified that if the DNA confirms Liam as Mohbad’s son, he would accept him, stressing that his demand is simply for certainty.
The results of the DNA test, when released, could have major implications not only for family relations but also for inheritance rights tied to Mohbad’s estate.
