NAF Clarifies Why C-130 Aircraft Diverted to Burkina Faso, Says Crew Safe

NAF C-130 diverted to Burkina Faso

The Nigerian Air Force has provided fresh clarification on the diversion of one of its C-130 aircraft to Burkina Faso, describing the development as a standard safety response carried out in line with international aviation protocols.

According to the Air Force, the aircraft—which was on a ferry mission to Portugal—made a precautionary landing after the crew detected a technical concern shortly after takeoff from Lagos on 8 December 2025.

In a statement issued by the Director of Public Relations and Information, Air Commodore Ehimen Ejodame, the Air Force confirmed that the crew diverted to the nearest safe airfield, Bobo-Dioulasso in Burkina Faso, strictly following global aviation safety procedures.

Ejodame stressed that all personnel on board are safe and currently receiving cordial hospitality from Burkinabe authorities as assessments continue.

He added that plans are already underway to resume the mission once technical checks are completed, reiterating that the Nigerian Air Force maintains unwavering commitment to operational safety.

The statement read:

“The Nigerian Air Force wishes to clarify reports regarding the diversion of a NAF C-130 aircraft during its ferry mission to Portugal on 8 December 2025. Following takeoff from Lagos, the crew observed a technical concern which necessitated a precautionary landing in Bobo-Dioulasso, Burkina Faso, the nearest airfield, in accordance with standard safety procedures and international aviation protocols. The crew is safe and has received cordial treatment from the host authorities. Plans are ongoing to resume the mission as scheduled. The Nigerian Air Force appreciates the support received and assures the public of its commitment to strict operational and safety standards.”

Earlier reports had suggested the aircraft, carrying 11 Nigerian military personnel, was grounded over alleged violation of Burkina Faso’s airspace. However, the Air Force’s latest clarification indicates the landing was prompted by internal technical checks, not diplomatic issues.

The Nigerian Air Force assured Nigerians that its operations remain guided by professionalism and safety, especially in the protection of its personnel and equipment.
