The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Kano State Command, has intercepted a major consignment of cannabis sativa weighing 112 kilograms after a road accident on the Zaria-Kano expressway.
The incident, which occurred around 6:00 a.m. on September 6 at Gadar Tamburawa, involved a Volkswagen Golf car and a truck. According to the NDLEA, officers on patrol heard a loud collision and rushed to the scene.
NDLEA operatives immediately rescued the injured occupants of the Golf car by dismantling the windscreen, windows, and doors. However, the drama unfolded when a passenger tried to flee after stepping out of the vehicle. He was quickly apprehended by officers.
Upon searching the car, officers discovered 150 blocks and three sacks of loose cannabis sativa, weighing a total of 112kg.
According to NDLEA spokesperson Mr. Sadiq Muhammad-Maigatari, the driver, who is currently receiving medical treatment, confessed to working for a consignor. He admitted to making multiple deliveries of cannabis within and outside Kano in the past. He also acknowledged using a one-way route in a bid to avoid NDLEA checkpoints.
The driver of the truck involved in the collision sustained a fracture, authorities confirmed. The incident, therefore, combines two offences: reckless driving and drug trafficking.
The NDLEA Kano Commander, Mr. Abubakar Idris-Ahmad, assured the public that the suspects would be prosecuted. He also commended the officers for their swift and professional handling of the situation.
Muhammad-Maigatari further praised the leadership of NDLEA Chairman, Brig.-Gen. Mohammed Buba Marwa (retd.), noting that the operation reflected the agency’s renewed commitment to fighting drug trafficking across Nigeria.
The NDLEA has urged Nigerians to stay away from drug trafficking and to promptly report suspicious movements of illicit substances to security agencies.
