The Defence Headquarters says officers will be charged after investigations found claims linking some of them to a plot to overthrow the government. The military confirmed that a thorough investigation into misconduct by some officers has been completed and that the findings have been sent to the proper authority for action.
In October 2025, the Defence Headquarters announced that 16 officers were arrested over acts of indiscipline and breaches of service regulations. The arrests were carried out by the Defence Intelligence Agency. The officers range in rank from Captain to Brigadier General.
Earlier reports had linked the arrests to secret meetings allegedly held to topple the government and even to the cancellation of the October 1 Independence Day parade, but the military previously described those claims as misleading and unverified.
On Monday, the Directorate of Defence Information, led by Major General Samaila Uba, said a comprehensive investigation was carried out following established military procedures. The results showed that some officers had cases to answer over allegations of plotting to overthrow the government, which the military says is against the ethics and professional standards expected of its personnel.
A statement from the military said the report has now been forwarded to the appropriate superior authority. Those officers found with cases to answer will be formally arraigned before a military judicial panel to face trial in line with the Armed Forces Act and other service regulations.
Major General Uba emphasized that the move is part of internal disciplinary action aimed at protecting order, discipline, and effectiveness within the Armed Forces. He said the process will ensure accountability while upholding fairness and due process.
“The Armed Forces remain resolute in maintaining the highest standards of professionalism, loyalty, and respect for constitutional authority,” he added.
