Millions of Nigerians are holding their breath as the country’s 2026 FIFA World Cup qualification campaign hangs in the balance following a controversial playoff defeat and a pending FIFA verdict that could reopen Super Eagles’ path to the tournament.
In November 2025, Nigeria’s Super Eagles came close to reaching the 2026 World Cup co-hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico – but were knocked out in the CAF playoff final against the Democratic Republic of Congo (DR Congo). After a 1-1 draw in normal and extra time, DR Congo won the match 4-3 on penalties, ending Nigeria’s hopes of progressing to the intercontinental playoff directly.
Earlier in the qualification process, Nigeria qualified for the playoff stage by finishing as one of Africa’s best runners-up, thanks in part to a hat-trick by Victor Osimhen in a 4-0 win over Benin.
Instead of accepting the result, the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) filed an official petition with FIFA, alleging that DR Congo fielded ineligible players in the playoff match, a move that could, if upheld, see Nigeria reinstated in the race for World Cup qualification.
As of now, FIFA has yet to issue a verdict, and fans remain anxious. Reports indicate that the decision has been deferred and may now be expected on Tuesday, February 17, 2026.
Officials at the NFF have also dismissed claims that FIFA already ruled on the matter, saying no formal communication has been received and urging the public to ignore misleading reports.
If FIFA rules in Nigeria’s favour, the Super Eagles could be reinstated into the qualification pathway, taking part in the intercontinental playoffs scheduled for March in Mexico — with a possible ticket to the World Cup at stake.
The team and its supporters have expressed confidence and hope, with NFF officials saying they believe the case is strong and well-founded.
