Nigerian Correctional Service Defends Transfer of Sheikh Abduljabbar Kabara

The Sheikh Abduljabbar Kabara transfer from Kano to another federal custodial facility has stirred fresh public reactions — but the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) insists the move followed due administrative procedure and falls within its legal mandate.

In a statement released Wednesday in Kano, the Command’s Public Relations Officer, CSC Musbahu Lawan-Kofar Nassarawa, clarified that the decision complied with the Nigerian Correctional Service Act, 2019, which authorizes inmate transfers between facilities nationwide.

According to the Service, inmate transfers like that of Sheikh Abduljabbar Kabara are guided by key operational considerations such as security classification, facility availability, and rehabilitation requirements.

Lawan-Kofar Nassarawa noted that such movements are routine across the correctional system and are conducted with proper documentation and administrative oversight.

“According to the Nigerian Correctional Service Act, 2019, the Service is empowered to manage inmates across various custodial facilities nationwide,” he stated.

The Command assured that Sheikh Abduljabbar’s fundamental rights remain intact despite the transfer. His legal status, right of appeal, and access to legal representation remain unaffected.

“The transfer does not in any way affect the inmate’s legal status, right of appeal, or access to legal representation,” Nassarawa added.

The Service further emphasized that inmate welfare remains central to its mandate, stressing that movements between custodial centres are done in line with established human rights protocols.

Public Reactions and Context
The Sheikh Abduljabbar Kabara transfer comes amid ongoing attention to high-profile inmate management in Nigeria. Public commentators have urged transparency in the handling of such cases, given their sensitive religious and social contexts.

Officials, however, maintain that the transfer was purely administrative and unrelated to any external pressure or controversy.

With the Nigerian Correctional Service reaffirming its commitment to due process, the Sheikh Abduljabbar Kabara transfer appears to align with the agency’s operational mandate. The development underscores the Service’s efforts to balance security, legality, and inmate welfare across Nigeria’s correctional network.
