The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), FCT Command, has deployed 4,500 personnel across Abuja and its environs to guarantee a hitch-free 65th Independence Day celebration.
In a statement released on Monday, the FCT Command spokesperson, Monica Ojobi, confirmed that the deployment was ordered by the FCT Commandant, Olusola Odumosu, to provide round-the-clock surveillance and protect lives, property, and Critical National Assets and Infrastructure (CNAI) before, during, and after the celebrations.
Ojobi disclosed that the officers were drawn from specialized units of the corps, including the Female Strike Force, Arms Squad, Operation Adakasu, and the Chemical Biological Radiological Nuclear Explosives (CBRNE) team, among others.
The teams will cover key areas and identified black spots, including uncompleted buildings suspected to harbour criminals, to prevent any form of security breach.
Commandant Odumosu instructed all Area Commanders and Divisional Officers to ensure adequate presence within their jurisdictions and warned that he would not tolerate any security lapses.
“All hands must be on deck. I will not tolerate any breaches, so deploy your personnel adequately,” Odumosu stated.
He also reminded officers to adhere strictly to the rules of engagement, warning that harassment, intimidation, or accidental discharge will not be condoned.
Odumosu urged residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious movement, individuals, or groups to the nearest security agency. He further encouraged Abuja residents to celebrate peacefully and pray for the nation’s growth and unity.
This year’s celebration is themed “Nigeria @ 65: All Hands on Deck for a Greater Nation.”
Activities have already commenced with interfaith prayers held at mosques and churches across the country.
