Power rotation debate heats up as North reviews Tinubu’s scorecard

Northern political leaders and FG officials at Arewa House Kaduna to reviews Tinubu’s scorecard

Power rotation debate heats up as North reviews Tinubu’s scorecard—that’s the refrain echoing in Kaduna this week. Traditional rulers, technocrats, and political leaders from all 19 northern states and the FCT gathered at Arewa House under the banner of the Sir Ahmadu Bello Memorial Foundation. Over two engaging days, they assessed President Bola Tinubu’s leadership and the long-standing promise of rotational presidency through the lense of national cohesion and equity.

Senator George Akume, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, reminded the audience that by the unwritten zoning agreement dating back to 1999, the North’s rightful turn to lead the nation may not come until 2031. He urged patience, emphasizing that peace and unity depend on honouring regional power-sharing protocols. Other dignitaries in attendance included NSA Nuhu Ribadu, Gen Christopher Musa, and top service chiefs—many of whom are northerners appointed by Tinubu himself.

What It Means for 2027 & Beyond

The message was clear: despite growing impatience, the Northern bloc wants to be assured that Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda delivers real dividends before any talk of power nod shifts—especially as 2027 elections approach. The meeting’s theme, “Assessing Electoral Promises: Fostering Government-Citizen Engagement for National Unity,” signals mounting expectation for measurable progress and regional inclusion
