Manchester United have pocketed €10 million from Benfica following Álvaro Carreras’ high-profile move to Real Madrid, according to reports from Madrid Zone.

The 22-year-old Spanish left-back signed a long-term contract with Xabi Alonso’s side on Monday, committing to the Santiago Bernabéu until 30 June 2031.

Carreras’ journey has come full circle. He initially joined Real Madrid’s youth system from Deportivo La Coruña at age 14 but departed for Manchester United in 2020. Despite being named United’s Under-23 Player of the Year in the 2021–22 season, he never made a senior appearance for the Premier League club.

In 2024, Carreras left Old Trafford permanently for Benfica after an underwhelming loan stint at Granada. It was at the Portuguese club that his career gained momentum, catching the eye of Real Madrid once again.

As part of the sell-on clause negotiated during his move to Benfica, Manchester United are now entitled to a €10 million payout from his latest transfer.

Carreras’ return to the Spanish capital adds depth to Real Madrid’s defense as the club continues its long-term rebuilding project under Alonso.
