From a recent appearance on The Clarity Zone podcast, Daniel Bwala, President Bola Tinubu’s Special Adviser on Policy Communication, made headlines when he asserted that Seyi Tinubu is qualified to contest any political office in Nigeria. This includes the possibility of running for Lagos State governor or even challenging his father for higher positions in future elections.
Bwala dismissed criticism that Seyi’s political engagement is only because of his father’s influence, saying that Seyi has established a reputation of his own. He emphasized that Seyi Tinubu is qualified to contest any political office, pointing out how Seyi has built bridges among young people, maintained friendships across party lines, and helped others—including critics—secure opportunities.
Describing Seyi as humble and unassuming despite his background as the son of a former Lagos governor and current president, Bwala emphasized that Seyi Tinubu is qualified to contest any political office due to his conduct. Unlike some others in similar positions, he has not been embroiled in scandals, nor has he resorted to social media vitriol—even when faced with criticism directed at his father.
When asked whether the presidency—or any top political office—is off limits because of familial ties, Bwala was clear: those ties do not disqualify someone. “If Seyi Tinubu’s father is the president, what stops him from running for Lagos State governor? Seyi Tinubu can even challenge his father in the next election,” he said. He urged Nigerians to judge Seyi based on their own interactions with him rather than inherited beliefs or assumptions.
