Tambuwal fights back over N189bn EFCC probe, claiming the investigation into alleged cash withdrawals during his governorship is politically motivated. The former Sokoto State governor and current senator was released on bail after being interrogated by the EFCC over an alleged N189 billion financial misconduct—sparking widespread controversy and allegations of selective prosecution.
Senator Aminu Waziri Tambuwal was detained by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) over allegations of suspicious cash withdrawals amounting to N189.15 billion from multiple state accounts between 2015 and 2021—accounts including FAAC allocations, the Government House, and SSG funds. EFCC sources say at least five suspected cashiers have been identified for further questioning.
He was released on administrative bail the following day after meeting bail conditions, though investigations are ongoing.
Opposition parties cried foul, accusing the EFCC of becoming a political tool under the current administration:
EFCC Chairman Ola Olukoyede rejected claims of political bias, stating there are no “sacred cows” and that the probe is grounded in evidence. He reiterated that former and current officials from various parties have been and will continue to be held accountable—regardless of political ties.
