Timini Egbuson: “Missing Out on Big Brother Africa Launched My Acting Career”

Nollywood star Timini Egbuson has opened up about a pivotal moment in his journey to fame, revealing that he was once on the verge of joining Big Brother Africa. However, a last-minute decision kept him out of the reality show — a setback that ultimately steered him toward his acting breakthrough.

Speaking on The Culture League podcast, Egbuson explained how being dropped from the Big Brother Africa cast list felt disappointing at the time, but in hindsight, it was a blessing in disguise. That same year, he landed his first major acting role in MTV Shuga Naija, a project that would later define his career.

“I was supposed to be on Big Brother Africa. There were five of us shortlisted, and we had done everything — even packed our bags. I hired someone to manage my social media. But I wasn’t selected,” Egbuson recalled. “I think Tayo went that year. But missing out gave me the opportunity to be part of MTV Shuga, which launched my career.”

Egbuson emphasized the importance of perspective when dealing with setbacks, especially in the entertainment industry.

“Sometimes, lost opportunities are blessings. There are roles I wanted and didn’t get, and I’ve also landed roles others wanted. Looking at my career now, I realise some of the things I didn’t get might have derailed me,” he said.

“If I had gone on Big Brother, the hype might have faded, and I may not have ended up where I am today. I believe I’m exactly where God wants me to be.”

The actor concluded with a valuable lesson for aspiring entertainers:

“When you miss out on something, dust yourself off and keep moving. That’s one of the hardest, yet most important lessons I’ve learnt.”

From a near miss in reality television to a defining moment on-screen, Timini Egbuson’s story is a testament to how detours can often lead to destiny.
