Tinubu extends tenure of Customs CG Adeniyi by one year, President Bola Tinubu has announced that Comptroller‑General Bashir Adewale Adeniyi will remain in office until August 2026, instead of ending his term on August 31, 2025. The extension was confirmed in a statement by Bayo Onanuga, the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy.
Tinubu’s decision is aimed at allowing Adeniyi to complete a series of major reforms, including modernising the Customs Service, rolling out the National Single Window Project, and fulfilling Nigeria’s commitments under the AfCFTA protocol. The Presidency praised Adeniyi’s “steadfast leadership and commitment to service”, emphasising that the extension will further strengthen trade facilitation, revenue collection, and border security.
Adeniyi took over as Acting Comptroller‑General in June 2023, and was confirmed in October 2023, following the departure of Hameed Ali. With a career spanning over a decade in NCS, he has served in multiple leadership roles, including Deputy Comptroller and Customs Public Relations Officer at headquarters. His experience is credited with improving transparency and enforcement—a track record the President evidently trusts to complete ongoing projects.
