Tinubu Faces No Serious Opposition — Pro-President Group Declares Jonathan’s Return ‘Embarrassment’

Former President Goodluck Jonathan

A pro-Tinubu coalition in Ondo State has boldly claimed that Tinubu faces no serious opposition ahead of the 2027 presidential election, warning that any bid by former President Goodluck Jonathan would “end in embarrassment.” The Progressive Network for Tinubu (PNT) made the declaration Tuesday, adding fuel to swirling speculation about Jonathan’s political future.

At a ceremony inaugurating local government structures across Ondo’s 18 LGAs, PNT’s Director General, Olumide Obadele, insisted that opposition parties like the PDP and ADC are in political distress, lacking the strength to challenge President Tinubu. The group warned Jonathan to stay away from the 2027 race—or risk tarnishing his legacy.

In parallel, a legal practitioner, Johnmary Jideobi, filed suit at the Federal High Court in Abuja seeking an order restraining Jonathan from contesting the 2027 election—a move that aligns with PNT’s rhetorical efforts.

Political Tensions Rise Over Jonathan’s Rumored Comeback

Jonathan has not formally declared his candidacy for 2027, but rumors of his return have dominated political conversation. The suit filed in Abuja cites constitutional arguments about term limits, asserting that Jonathan should be barred from contesting again. Critics, including civil society groups and analysts, characterize the legal challenge as political maneuvering rather than a bona fide constitutional question.

Meanwhile, PNT continues mobilization efforts, particularly among youth and communities with low voter turnout. The group claims only 28% of registered voters participated in previous elections in Ondo, and it now aims to awaken the remaining 70%. In Obadele’s words, Tinubu’s leadership and achievements must be sold in symbolic strongholds such as Yorubaland.

Reversals, Critiques & Legal Pushback

Not everyone accepts PNT’s narrative. The Young Nigerian Rights Organisation, led by Victor Ojei, condemned the court case as a “politically motivated distraction” and a violation of democratic norms. They urged the judiciary to dismiss the suit outright.

Legal expert SAN Oba Maduabuchi described the Jonathan eligibility case as an “abuse of court process,” noting that Nigeria’s Electoral Tribunal (Yenagoa) has already addressed parts of this question—a decision he claims remains binding unless overturned.

Also, former Governor Olusegun Mimiko has denied any involvement in Jonathan’s potential 2027 consultations, dismissing claims he is leading a Southwest team for Jonathan as baseless.

What This Means for 2027

If PNT’s claims hold sway—and the courts permit it—the political landscape for 2027 may tilt decisively in Tinubu’s favor. But the opposition, legal defenders, and public interest groups will likely push back. The tension between constitutional fairness and political power plays is now center stage.
