Tinubu Nominates Taiwo Oyedele as Minister of State for Finance in Major Cabinet Shake-Up

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has nominated Taiwo Oyedele as Minister of State for Finance, signaling a strategic shift aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s fiscal framework amid ongoing economic reform efforts.

The nomination, officially sent to the Senate for confirmation, replaces Dr. Doris Uzoka-Anite, who has been reassigned as Minister of State for the Ministry of Budget and National Planning — marking her third ministerial portfolio in the current administration.

Who Is Taiwo Oyedele?

Taiwo Oyedele, 50, is a seasoned economist, accountant, and public policy expert with over two decades of experience in fiscal and tax matters. Before his nomination, he served as Chairman of the Presidential Committee on Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms, where he led sweeping changes to Nigeria’s tax system — a cornerstone of President Tinubu’s broader economic reform agenda.

Oyedele spent 22 years at global consulting firm PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC), rising to become Fiscal Policy Partner and Africa Tax Leader. He is also a professor at Babcock University and a visiting scholar at the Lagos Business School.

His academic background includes an HND in Accountancy and Finance from Yaba College of Technology and a Bachelor of Science in Applied Accounting from Oxford Brookes University, with executive education from institutions including the London School of Economics, Yale University, and the Harvard Kennedy School.

Oyedele’s elevation to the finance ministry follows his central role in shaping Nigeria’s tax reform blueprint — a major policy designed to broaden the tax base, simplify the tax regime, and boost government revenue. Experts say his appointment could deepen fiscal reforms, strengthen revenue mobilisation, and enhance economic coordination during a critical phase of Nigeria’s economic recovery.

The nomination has been widely viewed as part of President Tinubu’s strategy to build a results-driven economic team that prioritises expertise and technical competence over political considerations.

Doris Uzoka-Anite’s Redeployment

Dr. Doris Uzoka-Anite, a medical doctor turned financial expert who previously served in the Ministry of State for Finance, has been moved to the Ministry of Budget and National Planning. This marks her third ministerial reassignment since joining the Federal Executive Council in 2023 — with prior roles including Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, and Minister of State in the Ministry of Finance.

The frequent reassignments reflect an ongoing realignment of key economic ministries as the Tinubu administration recalibrates priorities and strengthens governance structures.

Mr. Oyedele’s nomination will now be considered by the Senate, which must confirm the appointment before he can be officially sworn in and assume his duties as Minister of State for Finance.

If confirmed, Oyedele will work closely with Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun, to drive Nigeria’s fiscal policy and help implement key reforms meant to stabilise the economy, expand revenue, and support national development goals.
