Nigeria’s captain, William Troost Ekong, has officially announced his retirement from international football, bringing an end to a remarkable decade-long career with the Super Eagles.

In a heartfelt message shared on social media, Troost Ekong said he was “honoured and grateful” to have represented Nigeria. He described playing for the national team as the greatest privilege of his life and vowed to continue supporting the Super Eagles off the pitch.

Troost Ekong made his senior debut in 2015 and quickly became a cornerstone of Nigeria’s defence. Over his career, he earned 83 caps, scored crucial goals, and participated in five major tournaments. His achievements include a bronze medal at the 2016 Olympics, appearances in the 2018 FIFA World Cup, and standout performances in multiple Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournaments.

His leadership peaked during the 2023 AFCON campaign, where he captained Nigeria to the final, scored in the final, and earned recognition as one of the tournament’s top performers.
