The University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) has announced an immediate ban on all social activities taking place on its campus beyond 6:00 p.m., following a tragic incident that claimed the life of a guest during a student-organized event.
In a statement signed by the Acting Public Relations Officer, Mr. Inya Egwu, the university said the decision was prompted by the September 12 incident, when a businessman identified as Chiebonam Nweze (popularly known as Power-Autos) was stabbed to death. Nweze was attending a bonfire night organized by the Department of Archaeology and Heritage Studies when the event was reportedly hijacked by miscreants from a neighboring community.
UNN management described the situation as “unfortunate and deeply regrettable,” stressing that the safety of students, staff, and visitors remains its highest priority. “Henceforth, the UNN management has directed that all such activities must be held strictly during the daytime and under the supervision of the University Security Unit. Social events of any kind will not be permitted on our campuses beyond 6:00 p.m.,” the statement read.
According to the management, the ban is a preventive measure to curb potential security threats and to protect the lives of all members of the university community. The school assured the public that it remains fully committed to ensuring a safe and secure environment and would continue to take every necessary step to prevent a recurrence of such violence.
The tragic incident has sparked discussions about campus safety across Nigerian universities, with many calling for tighter security measures during student activities. UNN urged students and staff to cooperate fully with the new directive and to prioritize safety over late-night gatherings.
