The Director-General of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has moved to clarify misconceptions about Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs), assuring Nigerians that GMO foods currently in circulation are safe for consumption and strictly regulated.

Speaking during an awareness campaign, the DG explained that GMOs are developed through advanced scientific methods to enhance food security, improve crop resistance to pests and diseases, and boost nutritional value.

Why the Debate on GMOs?

Globally, GMOs have attracted mixed reactions. While supporters argue that they can help reduce hunger and boost food production, critics fear possible long-term health and environmental impacts.

NAFDAC’s DG stressed that no GMO product is allowed into Nigeria without rigorous scientific evaluation in line with global best practices and national biosafety regulations.

“We follow strict risk assessment protocols before approving any GMO product for importation or cultivation in Nigeria,” the DG said.

The Benefits of GMOs

  • Food Security: Helps Nigeria address rising food demand amid climate change.
  • Reduced Pesticide Use: Genetically engineered crops often require fewer chemicals.
  • Improved Nutrition: Some GMOs are fortified to combat malnutrition.

What Nigerians Should Know

  • NAFDAC regulates all GMOs to ensure safety.
  • Approved GMOs are safe for consumption, based on WHO and FAO standards.
  • Consumers should avoid panic and misinformation by relying on verified sources.
