EFCC Uncovers Scheme Moving Local Government Funds into Crypto Wallets
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has exposed a sophisticated corruption trend involving the transfer of local government funds directly into cryptocurrency wallets to siphon public funds out of Nigeria.
Speaking to media executives and journalists in Abuja, EFCC Chairman Ola Olukoyede disclosed that the commission’s Fraud Risk Assessment and Control Department detected suspicious transfers originating from a local government account to a private corporate account, which were subsequently converted into virtual assets.
The New Face of Cybercrime: Public Officials Using Youths as Fronts
Olukoyede warned that financial crime in Nigeria has evolved far beyond traditional “Yahoo Yahoo” cyber fraud. Corrupt directors and public servants are now using students and young tech-savvy citizens as fronts to launder state resources:
- Bypassing Tangible Assets: Rather than purchasing local real estate or traceable assets, officials transfer stolen funds to young proxies.
- 24-Hour International Transfers: Proxy accounts open virtual asset wallets globally, converting and transferring the plundered funds overseas within 24 hours to purchase luxury goods and offshore properties.
- Proactive Interventions: The EFCC froze the suspicious local government-linked account for 72 hours to trace the destination of the money before the funds could be fully converted.
“Is that the road to build? Is that the power to generate cryptocurrency wallets for your people? Are you asking me to close my eyes and not do something like that? Then you don’t need me in this office… Why must we be waiting for money to be stolen? Why can’t we change the narrative?” — Ola Olukoyede, EFCC Chairman
