NIS Passport Intervention Diaspora: Over 8,500 Nigerians Enrolled in US, UK, Canada & Qatar
The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has successfully registered 8,552 Nigerians abroad as part of its ongoing NIS passport intervention diaspora drive across the United States, Canada, Qatar, and the United Kingdom.
The Service Public Relations Officer, DCI Akinsola Akinlabi, disclosed the figures in an official statement released on Monday, September 21, 2026.
According to the NIS, the outreach was carried out under the directives of Minister of Interior Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, in collaboration with Nigerian diplomatic missions and diaspora community leaders, to improve service delivery and ease consular access for citizens living overseas.
Global Enrollment Breakdown
The intervention team covered multiple international hubs to clear application backlogs and process new registrations:
- United Kingdom (5,099 Enrolled): Recorded the highest number of registrants across centers in London and Manchester. Registration remains active in the UK, with passport printing and home delivery being handled concurrently.
- Canada (2,257 Enrolled): Exercises were carried out between September 6 and September 19 across Manitoba, Toronto, Saskatoon, Alberta, and New Brunswick.
- Qatar (751 Enrolled): Outreach completed between August 9 and August 24.
- United States (535 Enrolled): Exercises conducted between September 7 and September 15 covering Chicago, Michigan, and Milwaukee.

For applicants who were unable to secure physical appointment slots during the intervention tour, or those who prefer not to visit high commissions in person, the NIS advised using the remote digital channel.
The service reiterated that citizens can apply, upload documents, and process renewals directly via the Contactless Passport Application System, ensuring efficient service delivery without requiring physical presence at an embassy or outreach venue.
